I collaborated with an illustration team to create a dynamic coming of age children’s book duology, focused on teaching elementary and middle schoolers the importance of overcoming obstacles that they may face in life. These books illustrate the importance of learning to process one’s pain and struggles and not hurt others because of this pain. The first book Peanut Butter and Jealous follows the story of a young boy named Jelly who has a different socioeconomic background and rougher home life than that of his friend Peanut Butter.
Through communication and vulnerability Jelly learns that his treatment of Peanut Butter was wrong and they reconcile. The second follows a similar outline but with a cyber bullying twist. In Strawberry and Chocolate, the cyberbully Chocolate learns how and why her actions are wrong and the two girls come together and reconcile.
We started each illustration with a summary of the page and the dialogue that went along with it. From there, we created a cohesive storyboard. We then got each panel approved by the client and set out to work on the sketching. After the sketches, we drew the final linework and put down the base colors. Lastly, we laid down the shadows and lighting and perfected the blend modes in photoshop.

I can say that I am really proud of the outcome of both books. From the start to finish this process has been really enjoyable, engaging and has a positive impact in the Carson, California elementary and middle school districts.
